This stunning place was created by Peter the Greats daughter, Czarina Elizabeth I, who commissioned her favorite architect, Rastrelli. The palace is named after her mother, Catherine I, who died 30 years before the palace was begun in the mid 18th century. Catherine Palace was later expanded by Catherine the Great into the magnificent structure we see today, helped by the innovative designs of Charles Cameron, a Scot with no previous building experience.
