In this episode, the Roswell Flight Test Crew hears from Mark Williamson and Jed Smith, who are developing a weather balloon flight control system – known as the “Boomerang” – capable of venting helium and releasing ballast to change altitude. The aircraft is controlled remotely using a laptop computer, which also receives telemetry and tracks the balloon's position via GPS. The Boomerang is also designed to carry 1U CubeSat payload, a standard form-factor for amateur space balloon and satellite operations. With the ability to change altitude on demand, the Boomerang is capable of maneuvering like a manned hot air balloon, rising and falling to take advantage of winds blowing in different directions at different altitudes to exercise a degree of control over its direction of travel.
