This is the Millennium Master maiden flight video along with an extra flight segment to show a $3.00 upgrade that produced amazing results and an Outtake.
So how did the maiden go? Aside from freezing our fingers off (not to mention other parts of our bodies) the maiden was fun and was without much drama. By the way, the camera was shaking so bad because I was. It was frackin cold!
Pros:
She is very easy on the eyes and is an easy plane to fly. Probably not a great first plane but certainly a great first low wing plane (after some aileron experience).
Orientation is no problem with the white top and red bottom.
This is a very easy plane to land. It has excellent manners at slow speeds and lands pretty much all by itself.
The landing gear was well up to the task of dealing with our bumpy, frozen field and it was easy to steer around on the ground with the steerable nose wheel. It's probably one of the better foamies for grass fields and because it has trike landing gear, there's none of that warbird-like, tail dragging, nose-over stuff when you land on grass!
For pilots who like to fly scale, she has more than enough power to exceed scale speed and performance.
She is capable of most sport aerobatic maneuvers but lacked enough power to hold a knife edge and really attack a move. There is a $3.00 fix for this that we were lucky enough to stumble upon, more on that later.
The Tactic AnyLink Radio Adapter and Receiver worked flawlessly. You forget that you're using it.
It uses the popular 3s 2200 mAh lipos that we all know and love.
With the stock prop installed and the Timer set to a very conservative 5 minutes, I only put back 560 mAh so this setup looks like it should keep you in the air for a while.
Cons:
It looked silly flying around with no one looking out of the canopy. I'm going to have to find a pilot for her.
She'd look great with retracts but as one viewer (WarbirdFan66) so rightly commented, who wants the extra weight of the retracts on a plane of this size and weight. For a future video I will take off the gear and hand launch her to show how good she looks in the air without gear hanging down. After all, look what going "gearless" does for the good old PZ Trojan T-28.
The plane has adequate power for scale flight but not enough for me. The $3.00 fix that I mentioned might just be enough to stop me from having to put a new motor/esc/prop/battery system in her. I can't help it if I can't leave a good thing alone!!!
COG. I followed the recommendations in the manual and found that she was tail heavy. I actually moved the 2200 lipo forward almost an inch to get it right.
The red paint that they used on this plane comes off if you stare at it really hard. I mean seriously, don't brush the plane up against a kitten because the paint will fall off. This is one plane that doesn't like hangar rash. On a positive note, a red Sharpie or felt pen is perfect for keeping this plane looking like new. That was easy.
That's it!
Oh yeah, the $3.00 performance upgrade. I found an MAS 10x6 prop in a dusty box of spare props and threw it on the plane. Amazing! It woke her right up (and only 27 amps). I was going to hop it up but she flies so well with this prop that I think I'll leave a good thing alone.....(for now lol).
Sorry for this chapter of War and Peace (thank the Gods that I didn't try and tell you all this info with a voice over!)
A big shout out to Delfin and the crew at SN Hobbies for providing the Millennium Master for the video!
