The right voice, the right song, the right production. Dagny’s “Backbeat” boasted that sought-after combo, and it did what its somewhat rare chemistry will always do: made fans go “Whoa.” The Norwegian singer has been working at her music for years now, but in the last 12-15 months she’s truly made some big moves forward. We invited her to perform twice for Vevo’s dscvr series, and she blasted her way through “Backbeat” and “Fool’s Gold,” both part of her ‘Ultraviolet’ EP.
Dagny Sandvik has always had music around her. Mom was a singer, dad played jazz. Growing up, the 26-year-old liked everything from the Cardigans to the Spice Girls. That might not come as a shock – in some ways the music on ‘Ultraviolet’ is radically catchy and deeply classic. “There’s a real art to making a good pop song,” Dagny told The Guardian last year. “People underestimate it: a good pop song can be tricky.” And addictive. Zane Lowe knows one when he hears one. He brought “Backbeat” to the world when it premiered it on his Beats 1 show.
Dagny is always working on new tracks, of course. When she took the stage at the Knitting Factory in Brooklyn for our dscvr: Live show in April, you could feel the power. She has said that she loves it when a new song hits her “in the gut.” Her own music has that kind of impact and you can hear it in the performances of “Ultraviolet” and “Let It Rain.”
