Fact #1. They are a vital tool in a number of science and math classes. A student can expect to use a graphing calculator in algebra classes of all levels. These include geometry, calculus, trigonometry, biology, physics, chemistry, business and finance, and statistics.
Fact #2. There are models with rechargeable batteries and others with standard alkaline batteries. Many people prefer rechargeable devices. But the other option might be better for test takers. Students have a lot on their plate. They can't always be relied on to make sure all of their devices are charged ahead of time. And even if they do, there's always the chance the battery will die during class or a test. Alkaline options will be fine as long as you have a few extra batteries.
Fact #3. The first one designed for commercial sale was released by Casio in 1985. The advent was a significant leap forward in technology over all previous calculator models. Up until then, they could only process a single calculation at a time. It could perform a series of calculations based on formulas or functions that the user had input.
Fact #4. Once the market was opened up, other companies soon followed. In 1987, HP released the 28 series. These were the first ones capable of solving equations symbolically. It was available in two models. Both had a flip-open case with an alphabetic keyboard on the left and a scientific keyboard layout on the right. They also had a very small LCD dot matrix screen.
Fact #5. HP's was the first that had a Computer Algebra System and it came with 2 kilobytes of RAM. In 1988, the subsequent model was released. It had a stunning 32 kilobytes of RAM and a Saturn processor running at 1 megahurt. At the time, that was the same as desktop computers from just a year earlier.
