In this video I compare the $85 AMD Athlon X4 750K vs $230 Intel Core i5-4670K to see if it's worth it to spend the extra money on an expensive processor for a gaming PC. I use an entry level AMD Radeon 7770 graphics card, mid range AMD Radeon 7870 and a high end Nvidia GTX 780 with the 3DMark Fire Strike benchmark, Battlefield 3, Metro: Last Light and Crysis 3 to see how much of a difference spending over twice as much on the CPU makes.
To test I used the Athlon 750K on an MSI FM2-A75MA-E35 motherboard and the Core i5-4670K on an Asus Z87-Plus motherboard with each graphics card (Radeon 7770, Radeon 7870 and GTX 780). Each setup was running Windows 8 and outfitted with 8GB of 1600MHz RAM, a 500GB hard drive, 600 watt power supply and the graphics cards were updated to their latest beta release drivers (Catalyst 13.8 Beta for the 7770 and 7870 and 326.41 Beta for the 780).
Each game was used with the same real world playthrough monitored with Fraps and the games were set on playable settings at 1080p for the graphics cards which for the Radeon 7770 meant Battlefield 3 on High and Metro: Last Light and Crysis 3 on Medium, the Radeon 7870 played Battlefield 3 on Ultra and Metro: Last Light and Crysis 3 on High and the GTX 780 played Battlefield 3 on Ultra and Metro: Last Light and Crysis 3 on Very High.
