Fact #1. Radio control has been around since 1898. This is when Nikola Tesla designed the first ever RC boat and demonstrated it at Madison Square Garden. In 1903, the first RC apparatus was built at the Paris Academy of Science. World War 2 prompted further development of the technology. A radio controlled aerial drone plane was created for the Royal Flying Corps. It was to be used as a guided bomb.
Fact #2. The first RC airplane was constructed in 1937. This paved the way for hobby RC crafts. Starting in the late 1940s, the market was born. The initial focus was on RC boats and airplanes. 1967 saw the beginning of RC hobby car racing. The first RC helicopter was built in 1968. The technology continued to develop into the 1970s. Integrated circuits allowed for the production of smaller and cheaper electronic control systems.
Fact #3. There are several types of RC boats available for commercial sale. Fun sport boats are by far the most common and popular. High-end electric sport boats start at around 20 miles per hour. Some are capable of speeds over 40 miles per hour. Then there's RC sailboats. They're wind-powered, just like their larger brethren. You also have RC scale boats, which are exact replicas of full-size boats. One of the most interesting offshoots is the competitive combat boat. These are built like real warships. They're designed to fire some kind of projectile at opposing ships.
Fact #4. Deciding what type of RC boat to purchase is a personal endeavor. It depends on where and how you want to use it. A toy-grade boat is a good option for children. They're easy to control and can be found in nearly every price range. Mechanically inclined people might prefer gas-powered models. These models have working combustion engines.
Fact #5. If you enjoy speed and are willing to spend a little more, check out hobby-grade RC boats. For a more leisurely repast, an RC sailboat is probably best. These require the least amount of maintenance. They can even be great practice for improving real life sailing skills.
