In this episode, the Roswell Flight Test Crew provides continuing coverage of the FAA press conference at the 2016 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Brendan Schulman, DJI's vice president for policy and legal affairs, argues that while reasonable drone regulations, including registration, are necessary to ensure that they are safely integrated into the National Airspace System (NAS), the FAA must respect the individual initiative and privacy of drone pilots. He cites examples of drone pilots who have used their aircraft to save lives and even benefit the safety and security of civilian aviation. He warns that these opportunities must not be lost because of regulation that is too strict, and also argues against the public disclosure of personal information about drone pilots who register their aircraft with the FAA. He also discusses initiatives undertaken by DJI and other companies to use geofencing and built-in altitude limitations to make recreational drone operations safer.
