The Final is always reserved for the cream of the crop, and this day was no different. 150 skaters from 4 Qualifier events in Minneapolis, Lincoln, Kansas City, and St. Louis yielded only 13 Finalists in the mens comp, all with unique styles and their own bag of tricks. It was rad to see how quickly the newcomers adapted to the park and super fun to watch their creative process as they pieced together their 2-minute runs. It was really anyone’s contest, but in the end the hometown boys just couldn’t be faded on their own turf. Logan Mozey skated fast and furiously into a third place finish, edging out Sawyer Stevens and Emmanuelle Maire who’s fourth and fifth place finishes were separated by a mere two/tenths of a point. Ty Stigney had tricks for days that landed him in a well deserved second place. But the weekend belonged to Jonathon Reese, coming fresh off Saturday’s qualifier win to dominate again in the Finals.
The women’s contest is always a treat, made all the sweeter by a few newcomers to the series who seriously rip. Deej Redoble skated hard on Sunday but Lilian Ghallager came alive in the Finals to edge Deej out and take the 3rd place spot on the podium. Kristin Ebeling also decided to turn up the heat on Sunday, showing off her tech side with backside nollie flips and nollie inward heelflips over the hip, mixed in with fast and stylish backside smiths on the quarter and long feebles across the parking block coping. Dana Jeck answered back with some heat of her own (varial flip over the hip and 50-50’s down the big hubba) but it wouldn’t be enough to top Kristin’s best score of 82.2.
It was an epic conclusion to a gripping series that began in July and spanned four states in four months. Friendships were forged, dreams were realized, indoor skateparks were spotlighted, $15K in prize money was awarded, and skateboarding in the Heartland was successfully united.
