It’s July and that means space fans everywhere are taking time out to remember the Apollo 11 landing on the moon on July 20th, 1969. This year it’s a little bigger of a deal because this is the 50th anniversary of that event and since human beings love nice, round numbers like 50, we give it a little more importance than we usually do.
Which is why we are seeing so many great tributes to the event this week. CBS is restreaming it’s coverage of the entire mission starting with the launch on Tuesday and culminating with the landing tomorrow. It’s been a real treat to relive some of those memories of my childhood watching the landing on TV. I was only seven, but the event forged my path from that point on, space and astronomy would become central in my life.
The Apollo 11 moon landing is one of those events that if you were around when it happened, then you remember where you were, what you were doing and who you were with because this was one of the most exciting things to ever happen and everyone knew it was important. For the first time, human beings set foot on another world. Humanity had become untethered to the Earth, if only for a few brief days.
