Please help us to find bad videos. Broken or unappropriated video content?
I've always had a soft spot for full scale Cubs, especially those that work the back country landing on small or non-existent runways. Well I finally got this ARF assembled and with Leigh on the sticks, we got the maiden video in. Thanks as always for the great job flying Leigh!!!
This Platinum Edition Super Cub from E-flite did not disappoint. It looks the part and flies like, well, like a Cub. It actually flies much friendlier than my E-flite DHC-2 Beaver.
We couldn't get the Cub to behave poorly in a stall, it just gently put her nose down.
In the instruction manual, they recommend 80% aileron differential and no rudder mix. I found 80% was way too much and it made rolls very large and sloppy. I dialed it down to 50% (the same that I have in my DHC-2 Beaver) and it is much better. I might take it down a bit more as I slowly fine tune it.
The recommended elevator to flap mix was perfect. There was absolutely no ballooning when the flaps were deployed. I used a 1.5 second delay for the flaps.
I can't see any reason for low rates on this plane. All throws are set to the recommended high rate setting (or more) and it behaves very nicely.
To save weight, I went with the Power 25 setup instead of the Power 32. It was a good choice, the 25 has tons of power for this plane. I've read that many are using the 25 with floats and are very happy with the power.
As you can probably tell, I installed a set of 5" Kavan air filled tires on the Cub. They are awesome and only weigh 2.6 ounces compared to the 30 pounds or so that the 4 ½" Du-Bro's weigh that I have on my DCH-2 Beaver. (I have to keep making reference to the DHC-2 designation because it just doesn't sound right talking about my Beaver lol). You can get the tires at Sig Mfg.
This little Cub has a split elevator design with each half getting its own control rod. To save weight, the halves have been joined and now function with just one rod. Works great!
I read that a number of people complained about the stock tail wheel so I installed a Sullivan tail wheel assembly that works perfectly.
I had to get the Dremel out to do some surgery on the battery compartment to make it possible to fit some 4s 3300 mAh Turnigy batteries that I had and they now fit fine. Luckily, with the battery all the way forward, the COG is spot on.
In case you haven't guessed by now, I'm really happy with this plane! It's a keeper.
