You might’ve heard that plastic is often found inside the bodies of marine animals. Scientists have recently discovered that plastic makes its way into the human body either! In fact, chances are that it’s in your digestive system right now! You might be unwittingly consuming plastic, but you can keep this stuff out of your body!
The first thing you need to do is say “no” to single-use plastics like straws, grocery bags, water bottles, and discardable utensils. Also, you should avoid drinks that are in PET bottles. All that is really scary and disheartening. But it might even inspire more people to keep the oceans clear of garbage.

SUMMARY:
- Tons of plastic is being dumped into the sea at an alarming rate. It’s estimated that by 2050, all that plastic will actually outweigh the fish in the ocean! And it’s not going anywhere either.
- Like sea creatures, humans also live surrounded by plastic. It can be seen in obvious places like squeeze bottles, packages for fruits and vegetables, straws, as well as soda and water bottles.
- You already know the oceans are polluted with plastic. So if fish eat it, and then you eat fish, it makes its way up the food chain and into your body too!
- If your small child or baby likes to put plastic toys in their mouth, they could be ingesting microplastic.
- When food gets packaged in plastic containers, whether you do it at home or it’s done by the manufacturer, it can get contaminated by the plastic it’s wrapped in.
- If you’re getting plastic through water bottles, it can damage your immune system, cause early puberty, and lead to hyperactivity.
- If your soda and water bottles, chewing gum, and kitchenware are made with PET plastic, then you should know that PET is a suspected carcinogen (a.k.a., cancer-causing).
- Ingesting plastic isn’t the only concern. If the item also has dangerous chemicals, then you’d be exposed to those as well.
- When you’re at the grocery store, choose food items that come in glass or metal containers, not plastic.
- When it comes to using the microwave, don’t heat your food up in plastic Tupperware. Grab a microwave-safe plate and don’t be lazy!
- Check the label before you buy a new outfit. If it isn’t made with natural fibers, it’s probably best to leave it behind and protect your respiratory system.
- Check that your bedding and furniture are also made of natural materials. You spend so much time either sitting or lying down on your couch and bed that it’s crucial that the fabric isn’t damaging your health.
